Thamaasha (review)

How to presume a good movie…?

Here, in the Malayalam film industry, some names shown beneath the director in a movie poster is okay enough. For instance, Lijo Jose Pellissery, (director of “Amen”, “Ee Ma Yau” “Angamali Diaries” and some other cults) or Sameer Thahir, (cinematographer of “Big B”, furthermore director of well acclaimed “Chaappa Kurishu” and Neelakasham Pacha Kadal Chuvanna Bhoomi). Thankfully I found both these names in list of producers in the movie Thamaasha including Chemban Vinod Jose, not only a great actor who bagged his award for best actor in IFFI 2018, also the writer of “Angamali Diaries”.

Thamaasha is a feel good flick by Debut director Ashraf Hamza that tells the story of a young bald college professor and the three women he meets under different circumstances in his life.

Vinay Fort plays the role of the main Protagonist, Sreenivasan, a Malayalam professor in his age of 31 desperately seeking for a perfect bride, but holds a bunch of insecurities due to his loss of hair. During a casual, talk with Raheem, the peon in his college (Navas Vallikkunnu) he narrates about his love story and marriage, Sreenivasan also decides to apply the same trick with his co-worker Babitha teacher (Divyaprabha) but unfortunately, he fails that attempt and feels dejected.
After that incident, he accidently meets Safiya (Grace Antony) who seems to be interested on him but holds a witty suspense in the end.
The story gets on track after Sreenivasan meets Chinnu (Chinnu Chandni Nair) an obese girl but amazing in her charm and confidence that is straight opposite in the character of Sreenivasan.

What makes thamaasha different from any other rom-coms, it points fingertip on bullying in social Medias by unknown cyber goons and the directors stand on body shaming. As a tool, he used lines of poems of Ayyappan against racism.

Thamaasha is a movie shown the level of Vinay fort on acting. Obviously he is a product of the Pune Film Institute, Sreenivasan is entirely different from Vimal sir (his another well renowned character from the movie “Premam”) and Navas Vallikkunu, the movie will not be this much fun without this guy, both Divyaprabha and Grace did their job nicely, but Chinnu stoles the viewers heart. Coming to the technical side producer cum cinematographer Sameer Thahir did his work as usual, and BGM of Rex Vijayan too, the movie holds three beautiful songs one sang and composed by the legendary Shahbaz Aman himself.

A perfect comedy feel good movie which remains hundred percent close to its title, beyond that “Thamaasha” questions mind-set of people who hates or tease their fellow being on the basis of their looks.

Super Deluxe

Language: Tamil

Direction: Thiagarajan Kumararaja.

Starring: Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Remya Krishnan, Samantha, Mysskin.

After the amusement delivered through his debut neo noir flick “Aaranya Kaandam” promising director Thiagarajan Kumararaja is back with another gripping thriller in four different subplots.

The movie begins with the story of Vaenbu (Samantha Akkineni) & Mughil (Fahadh Faasil) a newlywed couple who tries to dispose a “secret” of Vaenbu which badly affects relationship between the couple.

Second subplots tells the tale of four teenage boys urges to watch a highly rated porn film from the so called audience, but when the movie starts the boys realized that the actress in the movie was mother of one in the gang. Now the adventure begins..!!

Rasakkutty and Shilpa (Vijay Sethupathi), my favorite two characters comes in the third subplot of the movie. Story of a wife and a six-year-old boy waiting for their beloved who left them few years back then finally returns home in a total unexpected transformation. A transgender.

The only story plot that interconnects one another is second and fourth, it tells the story of Arputham (Mysskin) a Tsunami survivor converted to Christianity believing that he survived because of a Jesus Christ Sculpture found during the disaster. Who is father of one of the boys in the second subplot.

The movie strikes attention of normal viewers and critics not only because of its gripping storyline and technical aspects, but also the politics discussed by the director through his characters. For example, couple of dialogues said by Fahadh Faasil when he becomes irritated. Also the opinion of director about life of some people in this society that others feels taboo, like the final dialogue of Remya Krishnan to her son and affection of Raasakkutty towards his father despite of his appearance. and a lot of dialogues and frames that reflects brilliance of the director.

Super Deluxe is a blend of four different stories that is fresh to an average Indian’s Intellectual appetite.
